Inman Family Receives Environmental Award for New Eco-Winery
Sonoma County’s Business Environmental Alliance recognized Inman Family Wines, an organic grape grower and eco-ethical winery in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, with a Best Practice Award on March 11 at the 10th Annual Business leaders Breakfast at the Hyatt Vineyard Creek in Santa Rosa.
The award applauds Inman Family’s strong commitment to incorporating recycling, repurposing and energy efficiency in the building of their new 5,000 case winery and in their general business practices. The building’s steel is made from recycled automobiles, 100% of the business’s energy is supplied by solar power and all waste water is recycled and stored for use in the vineyard. The winery’s parking lot even boasts the first privately owned, publically available Level 2 Electric Vehicle Charging Station in the North Bay. The station is connected directly to the solar array, which owner and winemaker Kathleen Inman explains, “allows guests to fill up on sunshine while touring the property.”
The tasting room is entirely fashioned from recycled redwood from an old barn which stood on the site and the tasting bars are made of recycled wine bottles from the San Francisco recycling program. Lighting is all LED or compact fluorescent; paints are zero VOC, toilets and faucets are the lowest water usage models available. The environmental impact of every aspect of the winery’s operations is scrutinized by Inman.
Inman Family Wines was established in 2000 by Kathleen Inman and her husband Simon, with the planting of their organically farmed Olivet Grange Vineyard; in the intervening years she has developed a reputation for elegant Pinot Noirs which uniquely express the Russian River Valley.
As grape grower and winemaker, Inman employs natural winemaking techniques that preserve nuance and highlight the unique qualities of her source vineyards. Fruit is harvested weeks before most neighbors and, more often than not, the naturally occurring yeasts from the vineyard are relied on for fermentations. Inman Family Wines believes that making world class wine is a full circle process that relies equally on healthy soil, natural winemaking and sustainable business practices.
The Business Environmental Alliance (BEA) was created in 1997 in collaboration with the Economic Development Board by business, environmental and government leaders to promote responsible environmental practices that cut costs for business.
